NEXT - A Valuable Tool for Youth Offensive Basketball
Sitting court side at a 5th grade game today I listened carefully to the dialog on the floor. By far the most uttered word was "HERE." Here means either, a) I'm open or b) I'm not open but throw it to me anyway!

NEXT is a verbal signal I've used in basketball camps in the past and is an excellent way to move the ball on the offensive end.

Young players are so focused on the ball that they forget what they must do to get open. Consequently, one player has the ball above his head while the other four players scream "here" about eight feet away.

The skill of making the next pass is actually a difficult thing to teach, especially in youth basketball. I would encourage all coaches to think about two things for your next practice:

1. Look at your spacing on the floor on offense. If your players are closer than 10 feet, they are too close. Have them back cut or just MOVE away from the ball. Why? This movement will open up an area for another teammate to cut into and get open.

2. Watch the cuts that your players make to get open. Most of them will be straight line cuts. I am certain that "you cannot get open on a straight line." Teach players to cut one direction (away from where they want to get open), then cut into the open area. This can be drilled many ways. The biggest thing is that you address it and work on it. You will be amazed at how your spacing and the efficiency of your offense improves.

Once you've addressed the issue of getting open and spacing, introduce the verbal call, "NEXT."

When players are cutting hard into an open area to catch the ball from a teammate, they call NEXT. This means that they will be open to catch the next pass. Players must be certain they will get open if they call next. In practice you should hear a series of "NEXT" screamed out all over the floor. At this point, you have improved your offense and also taught your players a skill for getting open and helping team spacing.

Sometimes a simple little adjustment like "NEXT" is all you need to make huge improvements on your team.
