Are you a basketball player that wants to learn how to jump higher? Most people that play basketball have the desire to increase their vertical leap but most people don’t know how to go about it. A basketball workout needs to incorporate jump training in as part of the workout. Every coach knows how to teach the fundamentals of basketball but that does not mean that they have an extensive knowledge of jumping or the proper techniques involved.

Many coaches teach many wrong practices when it comes to jumping so don’t go by what you hear a coach say unless they are a top notch sports and conditioning coach at a University. High school coaches for the most part are in no way qualified to teach jump training. A true regimen will not exist just to make the athletes sore and too many coaches and players believe that if a workout makes you really sore it is a great workout. This could not be further from the truth. In order for a workout to be effective you need to be training the proper areas of the body and training in the right way.

You need to do plyometrics along with weight training for the best results. Lets take a look at some of the strength training exercises that you could do. Calf Raises until you can do massive amounts of weight with great form and full range of motion. You don’t want the calves being the reason that you aren’t reaching yours goals. Training them hard is a great way to ensure that they don’t hold you back from your goals. When you jump you don’t squat all the way down before jumping so you need train by doing half squats and quarter squats as well. Doing them all will ensure that you get a deep bend before jumping because your legs will have the strength to hold you up. Cleans are a very technical workout that will help develop explosive power in the legs and the entire body, make sure that you are doing them correctly before doing heavy weight.

Basketball rules came into being the day the game was first played in 1891. The international basketball rules are governed by the technical commission of the International Basketball Federation. Most leagues, including the NBA (National Basketball Association), govern with their own rules. The primary objective of basketball is to score more points by putting the ball in opposition’s basket, which is placed ten feet above the ground. On completion of the game, the team that scores the most points wins. Recreational and high school games last thirty-two minutes, college and international games last forty minutes, women’s professional games last forty minutes, and men’s professional games last forty-eight minutes.

Referees on court are administers of the basketball rules. A basketball team consists of five players. A game begins with a ‘jump ball’ at the centre of the court, in which the referee tosses the ball high into the air and two players of each team line up in the middle of the court and try to direct the ball to one of their teammates. As per basketball rules, the team that possesses the ball plays offense and the opposition plays defense, protecting their basket. The offensive team has a set time, usually thirty-five seconds to score by putting the ball through the opposition’s basket. The player possessing the ball cannot run or walk with the ball without dribbling. Once the player stops dribbling, the ball must be passed or shot, or it must be touched by another player before the original player can regain the ball.

According to basketball rules, there are two ways of scoring points; the first is to make a basket, which is worth 2 or 3 points, depending on the distance of the shot. The second way is to score a foul shot or free throw, which is awarded to a player when the opposition commits a personal foul or a technical foul. Possession of the ball alternates when the offense scores or when the defense is successful in gaining the ball. When the offense team misses a shot, the ball is free and all players have equal opportunity to retrieve the ball, which is called making a rebound.

Basketball skills like shooting, ball handling, rebounding, stealing the ball, setting picks and screens, defense, keeping the post or boxing out, passing, blocking shots, moving without the ball, and foot-work are going to be your foundation especially a good jump shot. Now if you want to get to the next level of competition you must perfect your basketball skills and practice drills like you were playing in a game. Here are some great practice tips to make you the best you can be:

1. One-Spot Shooting – Shot continuously from one spot on the court until you hit 90% of your shots, then move to a new spot and repeat. Eventually you will be able to hit shots at incredible accuracy from anywhere on the court. Practice jump shots, lay-ups, hook shots, fad away jumpers, and standing shots with each hand. Practice dribbling before the shot, fake before the shot, basically shot as if you had a defender in your face.

2. One-hand Dribbling – Use one hand to dribble with, go through your legs, around and behind your back, over your shoulder, back and forth, side-to-side, high powerful bounces and low fast bounces. Do this with one hand at a time.

3. Plyometrics – You must be able to jump. You will most likely get a lot of jumping practice while playing, but to really unleash you full potential do some plyometrics. Try repetitive jumping from one spot bend down to your jumping angle and explode back up as high as you can, stay on the ground for only enough time for you to gather enough energy to jump as high as you can.

4. Squats and Leg Presses – You need major strength in your legs if you want to jump higher, hold the post, set better picks and screens. So you will need to be able to lift 2-3 times your body weight for squats and at least double that for your leg press. This will be painful, but you will gain tremendous strength, which will elevate your game quickly.

5. Upper Body Press and Pulls – Don’t forget about your upper-body. Fast hands means better dribbling, more steals and blocked shots, and a quick release shot. To increase your hand speed do push-ups, chin-ups are excellent for hand speed, shoulder presses, handstands, and shadow boxing. Now go out there and grab the rock!

6. Sprints – The best way to Increase HGH (Human Growth Hormone) is by running 5-10 second sprints. Sprints or any intense exercise will increase your HGH by as much as 300% for a few hours. What this means is that you will get faster, stronger, bigger muscles to take your basketball skills to the next level.

As hoops season tips off it’s time to start thinking about the basketball backboard and rim systems in your gymnasium. From junior recreation leagues and high school to junior college and division one NCAA programs both men and women players are getting bigger, stronger and faster and the stress this can put on rims and backboards increases the chance for damage and injury. Years ago power dunks and high flying players were limited to a few elite NBA stars but now even middle school players are doing their best Daryl Dawkins impression and trying to smash the glass of backboards when they throw down a vicious slam. Make sure your school or gym has high quality, durable and strong basketball backboards, backboard padding and goals to handle the strain of muscular kids.

No matter how strong or durable your indoor basketball system is you should always have a replacement system as back up just in case. Aside from players hanging on the rim after a dunk or inadvertent contact during blocks and rebounds basketball rims, backboards and nets eventually wear over time and having a solid back up ready to install can turn a postponed game into a short 15-minute wait. You can find solid replacement packages that include glass backboards, adjustable breakaway goals, bolt-on edge padding and nylon or chain netting to provide instant replacements for damaged or unsafe basketball system equipment during games and practices. Another good idea for basketball accessory equipment is backboard padding that comes in a wide variety of colors and helps protect players from head injuries when jumping high underneath the backboard.

Great for any indoor gymnasium is a portable basketball system that can be wheeled in a hurry to keep the game or practice going. Designed to meet the demands of adult recreation and elementary school play a portable rim and backboard system features a direct mount breakaway goal, rust-resistant powder coat finish, front mast padding on the basketball mount and durable acrylic backboard. Keep your players safe and the game and practices going with excellent indoor basketball system replacement equipment and portable goal units.

The origins of the game of basketball can be traced back to a gentleman by the name of Dr. James Naismith. In 1861, Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. During his early school days, Naismith would play a game called duck on a rock whereby the child would endeavor to knock the duck off the top of the rock with a toss of another rock. Later on, Naismith would go on to McGill University in Montreal and would later become McGill University’s Athletic Director. He would subsequently move on to YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts and in 1891, the game of basketball began.

Given the cold Massachusetts winters, Naismith needed to find a recreational activity that could be played indoors and he preferred a sport that would develop skill and one that was not exclusively relying on strength. The first game was played with two peach baskets for goals and a soccer ball. Further to his credit, Naismith became a medical doctor specializing in sports physiology and a Presbyterian minister. Naismith was able to see his beloved sport of basketball, gain acceptance in numerous countries through the YMCA since 1893. As well, the sport of basketball was brought forth at the Berlin Olympics in 1936. As we speak, the game of basketball has become a very popular professional sport.

What accessories can you add to your basketball hoop to make playing basketball more fun? More importantly, what can you add to bring your game to the next level? The things you can add are lights to play into the night, return aids, rebound helpers, retention net, and a ball carrier. Lights are most definite for outside courts. They allow you to truly play at night, and nighttime is some of the best time to play. It is cooler and simply has a better atmosphere. Some options for lights are just your average light that you put on your garage, or you could get a light up basketball net. These nets glow in the dark and some even light up extra when you score. Kind of cool. You can also get glow in the dark basketball as well.

Return aids also called basketball return nets or basketball chutes are very helpful when you are shooting and you want the ball to come back to a desired location like shooting free throw. These are connected to the rim and when a shot is made, the ball goes back to where the return net was pointing. Rebound helpers can be people, but I was talking about a piece of equipment that helps improve your rebounding ability. This device is placed inside the basketball hoop and helps with your rebounding skills. We all know how important rebounding is in the game of basketball. You need to practice more than just your dribbling and shooting out on that court.

A retention net helps you in rebounding ball. They are hooked the back of the basketball hoop and are big nets that catch all makes and miss of shots. These are somewhat spend, but allow you to get off a lot more shots because your ball will not be flying everywhere because the retention net will be catching it. Ball carriers are also very helpful if you have a lot of balls to go with them. With a lot of balls you do not have to chase after the misses. You can just grab the next ball of the rack. After you are done with a drills, you can take a break by picking up all the balls that went all over the place.

Everybody loves basketball, or most people anyway. Most of our kids have their heroes from their favorite basketball team and many aspire to being a pro basketball player one day. So what do they need most in life. All kids need a basketball ring in their yard so they can practice all day long. When one or two kids get together they compete with each other to dribble and shoot and they generally are having fun and getting some valuable fresh air. Much better than sitting in front of the TV or that video game getting square eyes. We all know that gaining weight prematurely is becoming a major problem for our kids so getting them a basketball ring for the backyard is probably one of the most important purchases you can make for them. Kids of all ages love to throw hoops and it doesn’t matter if they are still pre-school age or a mature teen, they all love it.

Basketball courts are big business in the Philippines where the kids just love to play. The kids from the Philippines love to copy anything from the US so they love their basketball. It is considered so important to provide some sort of sports outlet for kids that the local politicians all make sure they get the funds to build courts all over their local areas. They are plastered with their name of course but that is all promotion I suppose. They always have a roof in the Philippines so the kids can still play in the heat of the day.

One major problem with backyard basketball rings has always been the little kids. They all want to throw hoops too but the normal ring is much too high for them. Then of course if you have kids of different ages then a short ring is going to be no good to them and of course if Dad wants to have a game with the neighbors he is going to want the full size setup. However, some companies have solved that problem and designed a portable basketball ring. This can be easily wheeled out to wherever you want it and is very stable with the base being filled with sand or water. They have made the pole fully adjustable with a simple click up or down movement so that it can be adjusted to suit any age kid. The whole thing is completed with a full size backboard.

Most basketball players would definitely invest in a reliable pair of basketball shoes. After all, the game of basketball requires you to move vigorously. The movements such as jumping, running, shooting, blocking, and other side to side actions are obviously employed in the basketball game. The basketball players are nonetheless wise enough to choose a good and decent pair of basketball shoes. These pairs of basketball shoes need to be enduring so that not only wear and tear will be overcome but it will contain more of the capacity of hindering any occurrence of injuries on the player’s lower body parts. The basketball shoes should likewise be comfortable to be worn by the player as he executes the routines of the game. This is significant especially that the player needs to move swiftly and the least he requires is any difficulty in transferring his body weight from one foot to another. More so, if you are a basketball player yourself, you should always go for comfortable but reliable basketball shoes.

However, basketball players are different. They then opt for different kinds of basketball shoes. There are those power players who prefer basketball shoes with the high tops for the utmost ankle comfort and support. Meanwhile, the all-around basketball gamers often go for the mid-sole basketball shoes. The speedsters on the other hand most likely want the low-top and lightweight basketball shoes that provide no restriction on the ankles. There are basketball players who utilize plain tennis shoes when they go about the game. But then there are dangers that come along with tennis shoes. Some risks include higher chances of skidding, getting injured, and being slowed down due to weakening grips.

The basketball shoes are either crafted through the use of canvas, synthetic leather, or leather alone. The most popularly utilized material for the basketball shoes is the synthetic leather due to its lightweight and durability. Natural leather material is prone to stretching therefore heightening the dangers for the player. Other branded basketball shoes utilize the combined materials of natural textile or leather and the synthetic leather. Basketball teams are oftentimes sponsored by basketball shoes manufacturers. The common requirement is the reliable sock liner therein. As of now, there are several varieties of basketball shoes sold on the market. But of course, the standards for the choice of basketball shoes are always set for traction, durability, style, comfort, and support. Both male and female basketball players can very well satisfy themselves with the wide array of basketball shoes on the market.

In addition to being able to play the game, great players are usually exceptional athletes. Now, this doesn’t mean you have to be the fastest, strongest, highest jumping player on the team. But it does mean that you have to be very mobile, very agile, have good hand-eye coordination, and have good endurance. Being a good all-around athlete allows your basketball skills to flourish and grow.

Therefore, a basketball player should eat healthy not just for the game but for his overall health. But since the sport burns a lot of energy, players should eat more foods that contain the right nutrients that will give him the energy to sustain his fuel requirement – but still balanced to attain optimum use. There are 2 basic food groups that a basketball player should eat: protein and carbohydrates.

Proteins – are the building blocks of the body which is responsible for paving the increase of strength and muscle mass through exercise. Protein is found in fish, eggs, dairy products, milk, and meat. There are also kinds of vegetables that are rich in protein. These are leguminous plants or plants which grow on the vine or climbing pea or bean such as peanuts, soya, and asparagus. Protein should supply 10 percent of our energy needs.

Carbohydrates – are essential for the functioning of our brain. Carbohydrates are stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen. They are often found in foods such as rice, bread, potatoes, pasta, fruits, honey, jam, and pulses. Carbohydrates should supply 50 percent of our energy needs however, since a basketball player requires more fuel to keep him in the game, some sports nutritionists require players to have 70 percent carbo diet.

Eat at least 1 hour before the game. This gives the body ample time to digest the food before using it during the game. It is suggested that the player should eat lots of carbohydrates to store energy. Players aren’t often seen eating during the game but most people don’t know about this: eating a bananna during the game helps players to replenish lost energy quickly. Regularly drinking fluid during the game helps the player to bring back the water he has lost from the game.

After the game, the player should eat protein, then carbohydrates. This is because protein helps facilitates carbohydrate to replenish the storage chemical of the cell of the body called glycogen. Glycogen stores glucose, an important component in metabolism. Without these two, the body won’t regain the energy that is lost from the previous game and will contribute to mental and physical fatigue.

Basketball is a fun, popular sport and a great way to connect with friends and family. A little competition is good for everyone, so why not let basketball give you the opportunity? Shopping around and looking online give you the information you need to get a hoop that is ideal for you and your family. But did you know that there are a variety of accessories available to make your play time more fun, safe, and exciting?

One popular basketball hoop accessory is pole pads. Pole pads make your hoop look better but they also provide an extra safety feature. Whether your hoop has round poles or square poles you will be able to find pads that are a perfect fit. Most pads are made of foam with a vinyl covering so they are weather resistant. They come with a Velcro strip for easy removal.

Another basketball hoop accessory is the basketball goal net. These nets attach to the back of a basketball hoop just under the rim and extend down to the ground. These nets are great for practicing shots and free throws. No more running after balls and missed shots. The ball simply rolls down the net and back to you. Basketball goal nets give you more time to practice the shots that are most important to you. These nets can be left on a basketball hoop or removed and stored as needed.

Another accessory to help assist you with your shots is a ball return. This is a metal or plastic chute that snaps on to the rim of most goals. When you make a shot, the ball goes down the chute and right back to you. You won’t have to chase the ball around and can spend more time shooting and practicing the shots that may win the game. It is great for free throw practice and adjusts for shots made from all different angles.

To add some additional fun to your night games, try a light up rim. This fun accessory snaps to any size rim for a light show. Rim lights range from simple to elaborate. The simple lights give you some added light. They come in white or colored lights. The more elaborate lights go on and off when someone makes a basket. Many of the lights have different settings for a fun time.
